Brava: Bruno Faria recommends an awareness campaign. risk is real

Brava is a sporadically endangered island. This statement was made by a geophysicist at the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG), Bruno Faria. The specialist recommends an awareness campaign among the population about the fact that they live on a volcanic island, with the possibility of an eruption at any moment.

In an interview with Radio Morabeza's Panorama 3.0 program, Bruno Faria states that the possibility of a volcanic eruption on Brava Island is real and cites studies carried out, even by international specialists.

“They all share this opinion that an eruption on Brava can happen at any time and that they are violent eruptions. This is published in scientific articles and there is no possible discussion. Unless there is a completely new theory of volcanology that overturns everything known today,” he says.

The INMG technician confirms that, if it happens, the eruption will be “very explosive” and cites as an example the geological deposits on the island, namely the existing caves, namely Cova Joana, Cova Galinha, Covoada. “These caves result exactly from the interaction of magma with water, which produces very violent explosions that form these craters”, he explains.

The same position is defended by José Madeira, co-author of a study on the volcanology of Brava. In an interview with Expresso das Ilhas, the volcanologist says that any eruption that eventually happens in Brava could be more violent than the one that happened in Fogo, at the end of 2014.

“When magma comes into contact with subsurface water, this can contribute to increased explosiveness and, therefore, an eruption of this type usually starts relatively abruptly, with explosions, projection of rock blocks”, he says.

The island of Brava recorded intense earthquakes on the night of Monday to Tuesday last week. About 300 people were evacuated from Cova Joana and Benfica.

On Wednesday, after a lull in seismic activity, the government authorized the return of the evacuated population to their homes. The situation remains calm. The Panorama 3.0 program, by Rádio Morabeza, in partnership with Expresso das Ilhas, goes on the air every Friday at 7 pm, with repetition on Sundays after 11 am.
